EKB (Confederation of Basque Culture)


      The Confederation of Basque Culture (EKB) defines itself as a confederation of grass roots organizations working for the recovery and normalization of the Basque language and culture. It was founded in 1983 and over these past twelve years it has been operating especially since 1987 as it was in this year that an infrastructure and working staff was formed the main task of the Confederation of Basque Culture has been to promote common and coordinated tasks for the normalization for the Basque language whenever it calls for bringing together efforts undertaken in different activities and optimizes results. Another task which EKB fulfills is offering various services necessary for those persons and organizations involved in fomenting and normalizing Basque. The following organizations make up the Confederation of Basque Culture (EKB):

      • AEK- Organization for Basque literacy and learning for adults

      • IKA- Organization for Basque literacy and learning for adults

      • Ilazki- Organization for Basque literacy and learning for adults

      • Maizpide- Organization for Basque literacy and learning for adults

      • Urrats- Organization for Basque literacy and learning for adults

      • Goierriko Euskal Eskola- Organization for Basque literacy and learning for adults

      • Kalegana, service of traduction

      • Jakin, Basque Language magazine

      • Argia, Basque Language weekly

      • Arrano Beltza Euskal Tokia, (A Basque language meeting place in Donostia-San Sebastian)

      • Bagare, Gasteiz Basque Language Association

      • EHE (Euskal Herrian Euskaraz-The Basque Country in basque), a grasroots initiative to normalizing Basque

      • Euskaldunon Egunkaria, the only newspaper edited all in Basque language.

      • Oinarriak, platform for the Basque Cultural activity in Navarre

      • UEU (Summer Basque University)

      The EKB-Basque Confederation is a participant in "The European Bureau for Lesser Used Languages" which is a Consulting Body for language matters for the Commission of European Parliament and European Union. EKB is the representative for the Southern Basque Country.
